The
need for Indian industry to proactively initiate and
sustain healthy and educated discourse on HIV at workplaces
is immediate. The economic and social consequences that
will come with unchecked HIV infection rates are highly
significant.
Tamil Nadu, the state with the second largest number
of recorded HIV infections in India is also a state
that is highly industrialised. Low literacy levels and
a consequent poor health awareness among the bulk of
the workforce render them vulnerable to sexually transmitted
diseases. Mass media channels carrying HIV information
have been found to have limited influence on their risk
behaviour. |

YRG
CARE programmes aim to instill timely and proper awareness
on HIV/AIDS that generate self-awareness of risk behaviour
leading to a considered shift of behaviour from risky
to responsible and safe behaviours.
YRG CARE prevention workshops have addressed workers
across many large workplaces, that include -
Ford India, Park Sheraton, MRF, Brakes India, Sundaram
Clayton, Thirumalai Chemicals, ISEX Fashions, Neyveli
Lignite Corporation, ONKYO, The Hindu, AUDCO, TVS Tyres,
Autolec Industries.
Typically, these workshops are around 180 minutes duration
and consist of a slide show followed by an interactive
session in either Tamil or English according to the
constitution of the audience. A maximum of 50 participants
are allowed either as a homogenous or heterogeneous
group. A nominal fee of Rs.50 per participant is charged,
which includes the price of information booklet - FAQs
on HIV/AIDS infection (available in English and
Tamil). Transport (and boarding costs if the industry
is located outside of Chennai). Charges are payable
by the industry.
In keeping with international ethical norms, employees
are offered testing referral on request. Outcomes of
tests, or details of those seeking tests are kept confidential. |
