Dr. Suniti Solomon was a global leader in the fight against HIV. With her team, she documented the first cases of HIV infection in India in 1986 and went on to establish the Y.R. Gaitonde Centre for AIDS Research and Education (YRGCARE) at the Y.R. Gaitonde Medical, Educational and Research Foundation in 1993. Under Dr. Solomon’s leadership, YRGCARE grew into an organization with a strong international reputation for not only service delivery but for rigorous clinical, epidemiologic, and laboratory-based research. Currently, YRGCARE serves 20,000 persons living with HIV in Chennai and is implementing research and service programs across 20 Indian states through funding from the NIH, PEPFAR/USAID, NACO, Elton John AIDS Foundation and other stakeholders providing services to over 100,000 beneficiaries.
